HYROX glossary: key terms explained
The no-BS HYROX glossary — the official terms and the community slang you'll actually hear at the start line and in the pain cave. Plain English, occasionally brutal.
- Roxzone
- The transition area between a run and its station. It feels like a breather; it is not. Roxzone time counts toward your finish, so every second you spend hunched over hands-on-knees is a second on your result.
- Compromised running
- Running on legs already trashed by a station (and vice versa). It's the entire sport in two words — and why gym-only athletes fall apart on run 5. Train your runs straight off station work or the race will teach you the hard way.
- The wall (wall ball hell)
- Station 8: 75–100 wall balls on legs made of jelly, with the finish line taunting you. Where races are won, lost, and where grown adults rediscover prayer.
- No rep
- A judge rules your rep didn't count — shallow squat, ball missed the target, sloppy lunge. The two most demoralizing syllables in fitness, usually heard at wall ball 74 of 75.
- The pain cave
- The mental hole you crawl into somewhere around run 6 when everything hurts and quitting starts making excellent arguments. Visiting the pain cave — and not moving in — is a HYROX rite of passage.
- Sled push / pull
- A loaded sled dragged over 50 m by leg drive and spite. Widely considered the most humbling 50 metres in fitness; the weights are no joke, especially in Pro.
- SkiErg
- The ski-ergometer that opens the race — 1000 m of full-body pulling before you've even started running. Go out too hot here and you'll pay for it for the next 59 minutes.
- Farmers carry
- Hauling heavy kettlebells 200 m. Your grip fails before your legs do, every time. Nobody trains this enough and everybody regrets it.
- Sandbag lunges
- Walking lunges under a sandbag that gets heavier with each step even though it doesn't. The 'sandbag shuffle' is the survival gait you adopt once your quads file for divorce.
- Burpee broad jumps
- Burpee, then jump forward, repeated over distance, face-to-the-floor. Pace it or your heart rate spikes to a number you can't come back from.
- Doubles
- Two athletes run together and split the 8 stations. The most social format — and where a good partner turns suffering into a laugh. (This is our whole thing: find one free.)
- Open vs Pro
- Open = standard weights, accessible to most gym-goers. Pro = heavier weights and tighter standards for athletes who look at Open and think 'add more.'
- Elite 15
- The 15 fastest men and 15 fastest women in the world, racing head-to-head at the pointy end. The rest of us are racing them in spirit and losing by 25 minutes.
- Age grouper
- The everyday competitor racing their age category — the beating heart of every HYROX. Not chasing the podium, chasing the version of them from last race.
- Hybrid athlete
- The HYROX ideal: strong AND aerobically fit. Master of the middle, jack of neither. If a powerlifter and a marathoner had a very tired baby.
- Relay
- Four-person team; each athlete does two run-plus-station legs with handovers. The 'I'll try HYROX but only a quarter of it' entry point — no shame, great fun.
- Negative split
- Running the back half faster than the front. Proof you paced it right instead of blasting run 1 and time-travelling to the pain cave by run 3.
- Taper
- Cutting training volume in the days before a race so you show up fresh. Easy to program, agonising to actually trust while you feel like a sloth.
- Chipper
- A workout you chip away at rep by rep. HYROX is essentially one 90-minute chipper wearing a race bib.
- PB / PR
- Personal best / personal record — the number you swore you didn't care about until you crossed the line and immediately started plotting to beat it.
- DNF
- Did not finish. Rare in HYROX, but the cut-off, the sled, and the occasional heaving stomach have claimed a few. Wear the story, come back angrier.
