How to build your HYROX aerobic base with Zone 2
This is how to build the aerobic engine that carries all 8 runs and every station in between. Do it well and you'll hold pace late, recover between stations, and stop fading in the back half.
Unfortunately, most athletes never build it — because Zone 2 feels too easy to "count."
Why people skip it
It's slow, it's unglamorous, and ego says harder is better. So people spend every session in the painful middle zone: too hard to build aerobic base, too easy to drive top-end. Others skip it for lack of a plan, or quit before the adaptation (weeks, not days) shows up.
Here's how, step by step
Step 1: Make ~70% of your training easy. The bulk of endurance work should be low-intensity. This is where mitochondria and fat-burning adapt — the foundation everything else sits on.
Step 2: Hold a conversational pace. Where most go wrong: "easy" creeps to "moderate." You should be able to speak full sentences. Use a heart-rate cap or nose-breathing to stay honest.
Step 3: Add one threshold session a week. Balance the easy volume with some harder, sustained work to lift your ceiling — but keep it to a small slice.
Stack these for a few weeks and the light at the end is real: the same pace at a lower heart rate, and a race that finally feels controlled instead of survived.
