Grip socks

Non-negotiable for most athletes โ€” they stop your foot sliding inside the shoe on lunges and sled work, and many venues require them anyway. Cheap, high-impact.

Chalk or grip aid

Sweaty hands + a farmers-carry kettlebell = dropped reps. A small block of chalk or liquid chalk keeps your grip when it counts.

Lightweight gloves / hand protection

Optional, but the sled rope and heavy carries chew up hands. Thin gloves preserve grip without deadening feel.

Compression shorts / tights

Comfort over marginal gains โ€” reduce chafe over 8 km of running and lunges. Pick what you race in, not what looks fastest.

Weighted vest (for training, not race day)

A trending training tool for building HYROX-specific work capacity. Not used in the race, but useful for carries and lunges in prep โ€” buy adjustable.

Simple hydration + electrolytes

For a 60โ€“90 minute effort, dialling in pre-race hydration and electrolytes beats any gadget. Practise it in training.

What to skip (for now)

Recovery gadgets, fancy super-shoes, and anything promising a shortcut. The biggest performance lever isn't kit โ€” it's your aerobic base (Zone 2 guide) and, for doubles, a good partner.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need for my first HYROX?

Not much: a grippy stable shoe, grip socks, chalk for the carries, and race clothes you've trained in. Everything else is optional. Don't overspend before your first race.

Are grip socks required for HYROX?

Many venues require them and most athletes wear them regardless โ€” they prevent your foot sliding on lunges and sled work. They're cheap and worth it.

Do I need gloves for HYROX?

Optional. The sled rope and heavy carries can be rough on hands; thin gloves help some athletes, others prefer chalk and bare hands for feel.
