Menstrual cycle & HYROX training: what the science actually says

The popular idea: plan your training around your cycle. Lift heavy in the follicular phase, back off in the luteal phase, and never race on your period. "Cycle syncing" apps and coaches sell it as the female-specific secret.

What the research found

The largest analysis to date pooled 78 studies of over 1,000 naturally cycling women. Performance was at most trivially lower in the early follicular phase (the first days of your period) than in other phases. The effect was so small, and the studies so mixed in quality, that the authors advised against general phase-based recommendations (McNulty et al., 2020).

For strength, an umbrella review of every available meta-analysis concluded that cycle phase has no meaningful influence on acute strength or on long-term gains from resistance training (Colenso-Semple et al., 2023). Among the higher-quality studies, nearly all found no difference between phases. A 2025 lab study also found that muscle protein synthesis after lifting doesn't change across the cycle.

What actually matters: you, not the calendar

The averages hide large differences between women. Some feel flat, crampy or sleep badly before or during their period; many notice nothing. The evidence supports a personal, symptom-led approach, not a template:

Track 2–3 cycles. Log energy, sleep, cramps and how sessions felt alongside your cycle day. Patterns, if you have them, show up fast.

Adjust on bad days, not bad phases. Swap a threshold session for easy Zone 2 if symptoms are rough, then move on. Don't skip a whole week by default.

Don't fear race day. If your HYROX lands on your period, the research says your performance ceiling is essentially intact. Plan the practical things (period products, pain relief you've tried in training) and race.

The one cycle signal you must not ignore

A period that stops, or becomes very irregular, during heavy training is not normal. It's a recognised sign of low energy availability, the core of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs), which harms bone, hormones and performance (Mountjoy et al., 2023). Read our fueling & iron guide and see a clinician.

General education, not medical advice. If something hurts, leaks, or stops (like your period), see a qualified clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Does the menstrual cycle affect HYROX performance?

For most women, not much. The largest meta-analysis (78 studies) found at most a trivial reduction in performance in the early follicular phase (around your period), and an umbrella review found no meaningful effect of cycle phase on strength or training adaptations.

Should I cycle-sync my training?

There isn't good evidence that changing your training plan by cycle phase improves results. Track your own symptoms and adjust on bad days, rather than following a phase-based template.

Is it normal to lose my period when training hard?

No. A missing or irregular period in a training woman is a warning sign of low energy availability (REDs), not a badge of fitness. See a clinician.
