HYROX for women in your 20s: build the base that lasts
36% of the women who sign up to Find HYROX Partner are 24–29, more than any other age group. This decade gives you a real advantage, and one risk that's easy to miss.
Your advantage: you adapt fast
Strength, muscle and aerobic fitness all respond quickly to training at this age, and women gain relative strength at least as fast as men (Roberts et al., 2020). That makes your 20s the best time to build both engines at once: an aerobic base from mostly easy running, and strength endurance from twice-weekly lifting. Training both together doesn't meaningfully cancel out the strength gains (Schumann et al., 2022).
The investment most people miss: bone
Most of your adult bone mass is built by around age 30. Whatever peak you reach is what you carry into your 40s and menopause. Bone responds to load and impact: lifting, jumping, sled work and running all count. HYROX training is close to ideal for this, as long as you also eat enough.
The risk: underfueling
Low energy availability is most common in young, highly motivated women: training hard while trying to stay lean. The IOC's REDs consensus links it to lost periods, bone stress injuries and stalled performance (Mountjoy et al., 2023). It also undermines the bone you're trying to build. If your period goes missing, treat it as a red flag, not a sign of fitness. More in our fueling & iron guide.
Your 20s HYROX checklist
Run 3–4×/week, mostly easy, with one threshold session. Lift 2×/week for strength endurance (8–15 reps, then race-weight station work). Eat enough, with carbs around training and protein spread through the day. Get ferritin checked once a year. Race often: experience on pacing, transitions and the roxzone is cheap to earn now.
On contraception: a meta-analysis found oral-contraceptive users may perform slightly worse on average than naturally cycling women, but the effect was trivial and inconsistent (Elliott-Sale et al., 2020). Choose contraception for your health, not your split times.
Racing mixed doubles? Women are the scarce side of the mixed pool on Find HYROX Partner — men are already waiting at most races, so women usually match fastest. Find a mixed doubles partner (free) →
Frequently asked questions
What should women in their 20s focus on for HYROX?
Build a big aerobic base and real strength now, while you adapt fastest, and fuel properly. Most bone mass is built by around age 30, and lifting plus impact work helps.
Does the contraceptive pill affect HYROX performance?
A meta-analysis found oral contraceptive users may perform very slightly worse on average than naturally cycling women, but the effect was trivial and inconsistent. It's not a reason to change contraception for performance.
