Racing HYROX with a stranger: a safety guide for women

Doubles with a matched partner is one of the best ways into HYROX, and the vast majority of pairings are exactly what they look like: two athletes who want a good race. You still shouldn't have to take anyone on trust. These are the steps we'd give a friend.

Before you meet

Chat first. A few messages about race goals, pace and how you'd split the stations tells you a lot. Someone focused on the race is easy to spot.

Check they're real. A quick look at a public Strava or Instagram, or a past HYROX result, is normal and expected.

Use your own contact details carefully. You don't need to share your home address, workplace or daily schedule to plan a race.

The first session

Meet somewhere public and busy: a commercial gym, a HYROX training club, or a parkrun or run club. These are also the best places to practise stations.

Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to be back, and get yourself there and back independently.

Travel and race day

Book your own accommodation, even when racing away. Keep your own ticket and wave details, and agree a meeting point inside the venue rather than travelling together if you'd prefer.

Trust your instincts

Pressure to meet somewhere private, to share a room, or messages that drift away from training are good reasons to step back. You never owe anyone a race. On Find HYROX Partner, contact details are only shared after both of you say yes, and you can decline any match with one tap.

Racing mixed doubles? Women are the scarce side of the mixed pool on Find HYROX Partner — men are already waiting at most races, so women usually match fastest. Find a mixed doubles partner (free) →

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to race HYROX with someone I met online?

Most partnerships are simply two athletes who want to race. Sensible steps make it safer: chat first, meet at a busy gym or public run, tell someone where you'll be, and keep your own transport and accommodation.

Should I train with my partner before the race?

Ideally yes, once or twice. It lets you agree a station split and check you get along, and it's the best time to meet in a public, low-pressure setting.

What if I'm not comfortable with my match?

Say no or stop replying, with no explanation needed. On Find HYROX Partner you can decline a match with one tap and you'll go back into the pool.
